Dashavatar — 10 incarnations of Lord Vishnu. In Sanskrit "Dash" = ten, "Avatar" = "descending" (coming down). Whenever adharma increased on Earth, demonic forces became powerful, dharma was lost — Lord Vishnu took avatar on Earth. In Bhagavad Gita (4.7-8), Sri Krishna himself said — "Yada yada hi dharmasya glanir bhavati Bharata, abhyutthanam adharmasya tadatmanam srijamyaham."
Detailed description of Dashavatar in Garuda Purana, Bhagavata Purana, Matsya Purana — all. Matsya → Kurma → Varaha → Narasimha → Vamana → Parashurama → Rama → Krishna → Buddha → Kalki. This sequence also shows evolutionary order — fish (water) to serpent, amphibian, beast, dwarf human, human, complete human — remarkable similarity to Darwin's evolution theory! In this article, mythological story, symbol of 10 avatars, and characteristics of each.
✦ Order and Symbol of Dashavatar
1. Matsya Avatar (fish): At end of Satya Yuga. Protection of creation from great deluge. Saved king Satyavrata (Manu) by placing in boat with all seeds and knowledge. Rebirth after deluge.
2. Kurma Avatar (tortoise): During churning of ocean. Held Mandara mountain on his back — devas-asuras used it as churn for ocean churning. 14 jewels emerged — amrita, Lakshmi, Airavata, Moon, Dhanvantari.
3. Varaha Avatar (boar/pig): Asura named Hiranyaksha pressed Earth into sea-bed. Varaha lifted Earth out of sea-bed with his tusks. Killing of Hiranyaksha. In Narasimha story Hiranyaksha's brother Hiranyakashipu appears.
4. Narasimha Avatar (half man-half lion): Hiranyakashipu got boon from Brahma — immortality from day/night, inside/outside, human/beast, weapons, earth/sky. His son Prahlada was Vishnu-devotee — Hiranyakashipu tried to kill. Narasimha emerged from pillar, at twilight, on doorstep, on his thigh, killed him with claws.
5. Vamana Avatar (dwarf brahmin): King Bali (asura) won three worlds. Indra afraid. Vamana asked 3 paces of land from Bali. As Bali said "yes" — vast vishvarupa, earth-heaven in 2 paces. Third pace — on Bali's head. Sent Bali to Patal, but immortality-boon.
6. Parashurama Avatar: Brahmin-warrior. Revenge for father Jamadagni's insult — 21 times destruction of kshatriyas from earth. Parashu (axe) weapon. Chiranjivi — alive even today. Deity of weapon-vidya.
7. Rama Avatar: King of Ayodhya. Maryada Purushottam. Hero of Ramayana. Father Dasharatha-Kausalya. Wife Sita. 14-year exile. Killing of Ravana. Ideal king, ideal son, ideal husband, ideal brother. One-wife vow.
8. Krishna Avatar: End of Dvapara Yuga. Mathura-Vrindavan-Dwarka. Killing of Kansa, lifting of Govardhan, protection of Draupadi, Gita-teaching. Purnavatar — most lilas. 16,108 queens, 8 main patranis.
9. Buddha Avatar: At beginning of Kali Yuga. Yajna-violence had increased — devas dissatisfied with animal sacrifice. Buddha preached ahimsa-philosophy. Establishment of Buddhism. However, Buddha's followers don't consider him Vishnu-avatar.
10. Kalki Avatar (future): At end of Kali Yuga. Riding white horse, carrying sword. Born in Shambhal village. Destruction of evil, re-establishment of Satya Yuga. According to Hindu belief, after 4 lakh years. (Total Kali Yuga 4.32 lakh years — currently 5,127 years passed)
✦ Evolutionary Similarity
Dashavatar order and Darwin's evolution: 1) Matsya — fish (aquatic life). 2) Kurma — tortoise (amphibian). 3) Varaha — boar (mammalian beast). 4) Narasimha — half-beast half-human. 5) Vamana — dwarf human. 6) Parashurama — primitive human-warrior. 7) Rama — ideal human. 8) Krishna — complete human. 9) Buddha — spiritual human. 10) Kalki — future human.
Biological evolution happened in this very order — sea life → amphibian → land beast → human. Dashavatar written 5,000+ years ago — 4,500 years before Darwin. Wonderful far-sight of Vedic thinking.
Modern scholars like Professor J.B.S. Haldane (scientist) also commented on this similarity. Understanding "before history" was already in Hindu philosophy.
