Char Dham — Established by Adi Shankaracharya

In 8th century Adi Shankaracharya established four-dhams in four corners of India — symbol of complete India-unity. 1) Badrinath (north — Uttarakhand, Alaknanda-bank, 3,133m) — Vishnu. 2) Dwarka (west — Gujarat, Arabian Sea coast) — Krishna. 3) Jagannath Puri (east — Odisha, Bay of Bengal) — Jagannath (Krishna-form). 4) Rameshwaram (south — Tamil Nadu, Indian Ocean) — Shiva.

Char-dham yatra tradition: Start from east (Puri) → south (Rameshwaram) → west (Dwarka) → north (Badrinath) — according to Sun-motion. Modern travelers 12-15 days by air/rail. Belief — Char-dham yatra liberates from birth-death cycle.

Chhota Char Dham (Uttarakhand Himalaya)

Chhota Char Dham only in Uttarakhand — Garhwal Himalayas. 1) Yamunotri (3,293m, Yamuna source) 2) Gangotri (3,100m, Ganga-Gomukh) 3) Kedarnath (3,583m, Shiva-Jyotirlinga) 4) Badrinath (3,133m, Vishnu). These open only between April-November — closed in winters due to snow.

Char-dham 2026 kapat opening dates (estimated): Yamunotri — 19 April (Akshay-tritiya). Gangotri — 19 April. Kedarnath — 24 April. Badrinath — 27 April. (Official dates announced on Basant-panchami 2026.) Kapat closes — November after Deepavali.

Dwadash Jyotirling (12 Shiva-Jyotirlingas)

12 Swayambhu Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva — according to Shiva-Purana. Sequential: 1) Somnath (Gujarat, Veraval) — first 2) Mallikarjun (Andhra Pradesh, Srisailam) 3) Mahakaleshwar (Madhya Pradesh, Ujjain) — only south-facing 4) Omkareshwar (Madhya Pradesh, Khandwa) 5) Kedarnath (Uttarakhand) 6) Bhimashankar (Maharashtra, Pune).

Reciting Dwadash-Jyotirling-Stotra (composed by Adi Shankaracharya) gives fruit of complete Jyotirling-darshan. Special puja in all Jyotirlings on Mahashivratri (February-March). Lakhs of devotees in Kashi, Ujjain, Trimbakeshwar in Shravan-Mondays (July-August).

51 Shaktipeeths

After Sati's body-abandonment, Vishnu cut her organs into 51 parts with Sudarshan-chakra — wherever organs fell, became Shaktipeeths. Major — Kamakhya (Assam, Guwahati, yoni-peeth — most powerful), Vindhyavasini (Uttar Pradesh, Mirzapur), Kalighat (West Bengal, Kolkata), Jwalamukhi (Himachal Pradesh, Kangra — natural fire-flame).

Chintpurni (Himachal Pradesh) — mastak-peeth. Naina-Devi (Himachal Pradesh) — netra-peeth. Mansa-Devi (Haridwar). Vaishno-Devi (Jammu, Katra) — three-pindi form, maa's most famous tirth. Maximum 4-day yatra — 13 km walk/horse/helicopter from Katra.

Saptpuri = seven moksha-giving cities: 1) Ayodhya (Ram-birth) 2) Mathura (Krishna-birth) 3) Maya (Haridwar, Ganga-bank) 4) Kashi (Varanasi, dying at Manikarnika-ghat gives moksha) 5) Kanchi (Tamil Nadu, Kanchipuram) 6) Avantika (Ujjain, Kshipra-bank) 7) Dwarka. Shastra-proof of moksha-attainment by dying in any one of these.
