Shubh Hora — each hour of the 24 hours of the day is ruled by a specific planet. This is called "Hora". In Sanskrit, "Hora" means "hour" — and also a branch of astrology. Each hora is 60 minutes long, but the planet-rulership makes it auspicious or inauspicious. Activities started in a shubh hora yield the grace and siddhi of the corresponding planet.
The history of Hora-shastra is 2000+ years old. Babylon, Egypt, Greek, and Indian — all ancient civilizations mention the 7-day week and 24-hora day. Even today, the English word "hour" is derived from Sanskrit "Hora". In this article, we will study the 24-hora system, their computation, and the specific uses of each planetary-hora in detail.
✦ The Seven Planetary Horas
Seven planets — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn — are the basis of the hora system. Each hora is ruled by one planet. In a 24-hour day, there are 24 horas — but 7 planets repeat. Each planet's hora occurs 4-5 times in a month.
Sun Hora (1 hour): Auspicious for leadership, royal work, government work, meeting officials. Moon Hora: Travel, water-work, mother-related work, peace of mind. Mars Hora: War, debt-recovery, sports-competition, surgery. Mercury Hora: Education, business, writing, accounts, communication.
Jupiter Hora: Religious work, marriage, education-initiation, advice from guru, religious samskaras. Venus Hora: Art, music, fashion, love-marriage, jewelry purchase, beauty-related work. Saturn Hora: Iron-work, machinery, labor-work, land purchase, research, astrology.
✦ Daily Sequence of Horas
The first hora of the day begins with the day's ruling planet. Sunday starts with Sun Hora at sunrise, Monday with Moon Hora, Tuesday with Mars Hora, Wednesday with Mercury Hora, Thursday with Jupiter Hora, Friday with Venus Hora, Saturday with Saturn Hora.
The hora order is always: ruler → Venus → Mercury → Moon → Saturn → Jupiter → Mars → Sun (repeat). This order is the traditional "Hora order" — based on the orbital distance of planets (Saturn farthest, Moon nearest).
Example: Sunday sunrise 6 AM. Hora 1 (Sun) 6-7 AM. Hora 2 (Venus) 7-8 AM. Hora 3 (Mercury) 8-9 AM. Hora 4 (Moon) 9-10 AM. Hora 5 (Saturn) 10-11 AM. Hora 6 (Jupiter) 11 AM-12 PM. Hora 7 (Mars) 12-1 PM. Hora 8 (Sun) 1-2 PM (repeat).
Day has 12 horas (sunrise to sunset) and night has 12 horas (sunset to next sunrise). In summer, day-horas are long (~70 minutes), night-horas short (~50 minutes). In winter, opposite.
✦ Hora Selection for Various Activities
Marriage matters: Venus hora best (Venus = love/marriage karaka). Jupiter hora also favorable. Mars/Saturn hora prohibited. Friday's Venus hora is the supreme.
Business/wealth-work: Mercury hora (Mercury = commerce karaka) best. Jupiter hora (for expansion), Venus hora (prosperity) also good. Wednesday's Mercury hora is unique.
Education/exams/interviews: Mercury hora (intellect-karaka) excellent. Jupiter hora (knowledge-karaka) also favorable. Wednesday-Thursday related horas.
Medicine/surgery: Mars hora (weapon-karaka) best (only for surgery). Moon hora (mind-health) for mental treatment. Jupiter hora (lifespan-karaka) for general medicine.
Travel: Moon hora (travel-karaka) best. Mercury hora (motion) also good. Saturn hora (delay) prohibited.
Religious work: Jupiter hora best. Moon, Sun also good. Saturn, Mars prohibited.
Government work: Sun hora (state-karaka) best. Jupiter hora also favorable. Saturn hora difficult but eventually successful.
✦ Relationship Between Hora and Choghadiya
Both Hora and Choghadiya are time-selection systems — but different. Choghadiya divides the day into 8 parts (16 total), Hora into 12 parts (24 total). Choghadiya duration 90+ minutes, Hora 60 minutes.
Both run on the same principle — first part of the day starts with the day-ruler, same order. So Sunday's first Choghadiya and first Hora are both Sun-ruled.
Which to choose? — For ordinary work (travel, meetings, purchases), Choghadiya is sufficient. For astrologically subtle work (engagement-marriage, religious samskaras, beginning treatment), Hora is more accurate. View both together — best when good Choghadiya + good Hora coincide.

✦ Frequently Asked Questions
Does hora occur at the same time each day?▼
No. Hora depends on sunrise-sunset. Hora-duration changes based on day-length. In summer, day-hora 70+ minutes, night-hora 50 minutes. In winter, opposite. Our calculator gives local computation.
Is Hora-shastra scientific?▼
Hora-shastra is a concept from traditional astrology. Modern science does not directly validate it. However, this experience-based system is still relevant after millennia. Psychologically, choosing a "favorable time" increases the probability of success.
How to choose hora for special work?▼
Choose the hora of the planet that is the special karaka of your work. Example: business = Mercury, marriage = Venus, education = Mercury/Jupiter, government work = Sun. Look at that planet's hora on the day when that planet is strong (its own day).
