Rahu Kaal — the period of the day considered extremely inauspicious in scriptures. According to traditional Hindu astrology, no new activity should be initiated during this time. Rahu is a shadow planet — according to mythology, when the gods and demons were sharing amrita (nectar) after the churning of the ocean, Rahu disguised himself as a god and drank the nectar. Lord Vishnu cut off his head with the Sudarshana Chakra — the severed head became "Rahu" and the body became "Ketu".

Rahu Kaal is also called "Kaala Hani" or "Inauspicious Period". About 1/8 of the daily time — that is, one-eighth of the period from sunrise to sunset — falls under Rahu's influence. For each weekday, this falls in a specific segment, but its exact timing varies by location because sunrise and sunset times also differ.

Rahu Kaal Computation

Rahu Kaal computation is simple. The time from sunrise to sunset is divided into 8 equal segments. Then, for each weekday, a specific segment is called Rahu Kaal. Tuesday gets the 2nd segment, Friday the 3rd, Wednesday the 4th, Thursday the 5th, Saturday the 6th, Monday the 7th, and Sunday the 8th — Sunday's Rahu Kaal is the last.

For example, if Delhi has sunrise at 5:42 AM and sunset at 6:55 PM — total day duration is 13 hours 13 minutes = 793 minutes. 793 ÷ 8 = 99.13 minutes per segment. Tuesday's Rahu Kaal in segment 2 would be 5:42 AM + 99.13 = 7:21 AM to 9:00 AM.

Many people remember Rahu Kaal by fixed times like "1:30-3:00 PM Tuesday" — this is wrong. It is only an average. Based on your actual location and date, the timing can vary by 30-60 minutes. In summer when days are longer, Rahu Kaal also extends to 90+ minutes; in winter it can shrink to 70 minutes.

A simple memorization formula: "Mangal Shukra Budh Guru, Shani Som Ravi Priya" — this is the order of Rahu Kaal segments for the seven days (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8). For each weekday, Rahu Kaal falls in the corresponding segment.

What is Prohibited During Rahu Kaal

Traditionally, the following activities are considered prohibited during Rahu Kaal — marriage, engagement, griha pravesh, beginning a journey (especially a long one), starting a new business, opening a shop, signing important agreements, large financial investments, taking or giving loans, beginning medical procedures, naming or sacred ceremonies, beginning of puja rituals.

Practically, ordinary daily activities — going to office, going to school, eating, sleeping — can be done during Rahu Kaal. Only special "new" or "important" undertakings are prohibited. If something is already in progress (like a journey), continuing it is not faulty.

According to some astrologers, certain specific activities are favorable during Rahu Kaal — defeating enemies, dispelling evil forces, debt recovery, secret mantra-japa, tantric practices. This is the "viruddha-rashi" (opposite-sign) principle — Rahu is favorable for activities opposite to those it is inauspicious for.

Mythological Origin of Rahu

According to the Puranas, Rahu was an asura (demon) — father Viprachitti, mother Simhika. When amrita emerged from the churning of the ocean, Lord Vishnu took the form of Mohini and began distributing amrita to the gods. Rahu disguised himself as a god and drank a few drops of amrita — but Surya and Chandra recognized him and informed Lord Vishnu.

Vishnu cut off Rahu's head with the Sudarshana Chakra. But by then, the amrita had reached his throat — so the head became immortal. This severed head is "Rahu", and the body is "Ketu". Both are the two intersection points of the Moon's orbit — Rahu the north node and Ketu the south node. In astrology these are called "shadow planets".

Due to the betrayal by Surya and Chandra, Rahu vowed to keep swallowing the Sun and Moon — this is the mythological explanation of eclipses. In modern astronomy, Rahu and Ketu are the lunar nodes — when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are near these nodes, an eclipse occurs.

Other Inauspicious Periods Related to Rahu Kaal

Two more inauspicious periods similar to Rahu Kaal are Yamaganda and Gulika Kaal. Yamaganda (Yamaraja's period) is also a segment of the day's 8 parts, but with different weekday-order: Sunday 4, Monday 3, Tuesday 2, Wednesday 1, Thursday 7, Friday 6, Saturday 5.

Gulika Kaal (Gulika is the son of Saturn) is also a part of the day — Sunday 6, Monday 5, Tuesday 4, Wednesday 3, Thursday 2, Friday 1, Saturday 7. All three — Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda, Gulika Kaal — are considered equally inauspicious and should be avoided for new undertakings.

Additionally, "Vishti Karana" (Bhadra) is also inauspicious — it is one of the 8 movable types of karana that occurs 8 times each month. Auspicious work is prohibited during Bhadra. Our calculator displays all inauspicious periods together — Rahu, Yamaganda, Gulika, Bhadra.

Practical Remedies for Rahu Kaal

If some work becomes unavoidable during Rahu Kaal — like emergency travel, medical attention, or a meeting — some remedies can be taken. Recitation of Hanuman Chalisa, chanting "Om Ram Rahave Namah" 108 times, or prayer to Hanuman ji — these reduce Rahu's inauspicious effect.

Traditional remedies for Rahu Shanti: donating blue or black cloth on Saturday, abstaining from meat and alcohol, lighting a mustard oil lamp, worship of Hanuman ji, wearing Gomed (Hessonite) gemstone (only with consultation of a qualified astrologer).

During Rahu Mahadasha or Antardasha, certain years require special caution. These periods may bring big changes in life, unexpected events, or intense spiritual experiences. Rahu Mahadasha lasts 18 years — if positioned favorably in your horoscope, it can bring unexpected success in fields like foreign travel, politics, media.
