Abhijit Muhurat — the most auspicious period of the day. In Sanskrit, "Abhijit" means "victorious" or "invincible". According to scriptures, the entire day is divided into 30 muhurats — each 48 minutes long. Among these 30 muhurats, the 8th day-muhurat is called "Abhijit", which falls right at the middle of local solar noon. It is considered the most powerful and auspicious period of the day.
The most famous mention of Abhijit Muhurat is in the Ramayana — Lord Rama's coronation was scheduled to take place during Abhijit Muhurat (before Kaikeyi's boon). The glory of Abhijit Muhurat is also described in many places in the Mahabharata. Ram Daivajna, the author of Muhurta Chintamani (16th century), called Abhijit "sarva-karya-siddhi-dayak" (granting success in all endeavors).
✦ Vedic Concept of Abhijit Muhurat
The 28th nakshatra "Abhijit" is mentioned in the Vedas — a small segment (4°) between Uttarashadha and Shravana. Its deity is Brahma. In the traditional 27 nakshatras, Abhijit is not counted — it is used only from a time-perspective. At midday when the Sun is right above the head, the Abhijit nakshatra becomes active — this exact moment is called "Abhijit Muhurat".
Astronomically, Abhijit Muhurat is centered on the Sun's local solar noon. This is "True Solar Noon", not the 12:00 PM clock noon. In Delhi between March-September, local solar noon is between 12:10-12:25 PM, in Mumbai between 12:30-12:45 PM (depending on longitude). Abhijit Muhurat starts 24 minutes before this midday and ends 24 minutes after — total 48 minutes.
Classically, Abhijit Muhurat is the 8th of 30-muhurat divisions. Divide the day (sunrise to sunset) into 15 muhurats — the middle 8th is Abhijit. Each muhurat is 1/15 of day-duration. In summer when days are longer, Abhijit also extends to 50+ minutes; in winter shrinks to 40 minutes.
✦ Precise Computation of Abhijit Muhurat
Abhijit Muhurat computation in 4 steps: 1) Calculate local sunrise and sunset (according to location's longitude and latitude). 2) Midday = (sunrise + sunset) / 2. 3) Day duration = sunset − sunrise. 4) Abhijit Start = Midday − (day-duration / 30); Abhijit End = Midday + (day-duration / 30).
Example: 28 April 2026, Delhi. Sunrise 5:42 AM, Sunset 6:55 PM. Day duration = 13 hours 13 minutes = 793 minutes. Midday = (5:42 + 18:55) / 2 = 12:18 PM. Abhijit segment = 793/30 ≈ 26 minutes each side. Abhijit Muhurat: 11:52 AM to 12:44 PM (52 minutes).
Simple estimate: In most days, Abhijit Muhurat falls roughly between 11:50 AM and 12:30 PM. However, exact timing depends on your city and date. Our calculator provides local Abhijit computation for 200+ cities.
✦ Auspicious Activities for Abhijit Muhurat
Best activities: starting new ventures, war and journeys to victory, coronation and assuming high office, griha pravesh, bhumi pujan, signing important agreements, contesting elections, going for interviews, business inception, new projects, beginning of medical treatment, going for examinations. Activities started in Abhijit traditionally always achieve "victory".
Special note: Although Abhijit is universally auspicious, it is NOT recommended for marriage rites. Evening time is more suitable for marriage. Also, southward travel is prohibited in Abhijit — this is purely a traditional rule.
Business uses: Starting new business, opening a shop, first day of office, large financial investments, property purchase, vehicle purchase — extremely auspicious in Abhijit. In modern corporate times, the first meeting in Abhijit, contract signing, product launch — all are considered auspicious.
✦ The Wednesday Abhijit Exception
The only exception to Abhijit Muhurat is Wednesday. Abhijit is not considered auspicious on Wednesdays — Muhurta Chintamani specifically prohibits it. Reason: Mercury (Budh) planet is not in harmony with Abhijit nakshatra (whose deity is Brahma) — therefore, the energy of Wednesday's midday is not of "victorious" nature.
Modern view: Some astrologers believe ordinary tasks can still be done in Abhijit on Wednesdays — but special activities (marriage, griha pravesh, big agreements) should be avoided. This is a matter of personal faith.
Safe option: If Wednesday Abhijit is necessary, perform special peace-rites — Ganesha worship, donating green clothes for Mercury, chanting "Om Bum Budhaya Namah" 108 times.
