Begin tasks in auspicious Choghadiya — success will be assured

Choghadiya — an ancient Vedic time-selection system that divides the day and night into sixteen parts. Derived from the Sanskrit "Chaturghatika" (four ghatis, approximately 96 minutes), Choghadiya is the simplest and most practical system in muhurat-shastra. In rural India, it has been the basis for daily decisions of farmers, traders, and travelers for millennia.

The fundamental principle of Choghadiya is — every part of the day is ruled by some planet, and each planet has its own nature — some auspicious, some inauspicious, some neutral. Choosing the time of an activity based on this knowledge increases the probability of success. In this article, we will study the principles of Choghadiya, the seven types, calculation methodology, and practical applications in detail.

History and Origin of Choghadiya

Choghadiya is mentioned in ancient Indian astronomical and astrological texts. Muhurta Chintamani (16th century) provides detailed discussion of Choghadiya. However, its core concept is much older — possibly from the Vedic period.

Traditionally, Choghadiya was used for activities for which detailed panchang consultation was not feasible. A farmer about to sow seeds, a trader about to open a shop, a traveler going to a new village — for all of these, "stepping out after checking Choghadiya" was an established practice.

The Seven Types of Choghadiya

Amrit — Moon ruled, the best auspicious Choghadiya. In Sanskrit, "Amrit" means the nectar of immortality — the same divine drink obtained from the churning of the ocean that makes the gods immortal. Activities started in this Choghadiya are bound to succeed. Best for marriage, griha pravesh, travel, worship, medical treatment.

Shubh — Jupiter ruled, extremely auspicious. Jupiter is the guru of the gods — the deity of knowledge, dharma, and virtue. Activities done in Shubh Choghadiya succeed according to dharma and morality. Best for education, religious work, guru-diksha, marriage, naming ceremonies.

Labh — Mercury ruled, auspicious for wealth-related work. Mercury is the deity of intellect and commerce. Business, investment, or financial decisions started in Labh Choghadiya are more profitable. Excellent for new business, opening a shop, property purchase, gold-silver purchase, debt recovery.

Char — Venus ruled, movable. "Char" means "moving" — this Choghadiya is especially auspicious for travel and movement. Although it falls in the "neutral" category — neither fully auspicious nor inauspicious — it is completely suitable for daily activities and short journeys.

Rog — Mars ruled, inauspicious. "Rog" means "disease" — Mars is the deity of war and conflict. Prohibited for new and auspicious activities. However, exception — favorable for victory over enemies, war, competition, debt recovery, lawsuits.

Kaal — Saturn ruled, extremely inauspicious. "Kaal" means "death" — Saturn is the deity of justice and karma-fruit. All new activities completely prohibited. However — Saturn is auspicious for wealth accumulation, agricultural work, labor work — these can be done in Kaal Choghadiya.

Udveg — Sun ruled, inauspicious. "Udveg" means "anxiety and restlessness" — reflects the Sun's fierce energy. Auspicious work prohibited. But — suitable for government work, meeting officials, leadership-related activities.

Computation of Choghadiya

Choghadiya computation is based on sunrise and sunset. The period from sunrise to sunset is divided into 8 equal parts — each part is one "Day Choghadiya". Similarly, the period from sunset to next sunrise is divided into 8 parts — "Night Choghadiya". Total of 16 Choghadiya in 24 hours.

The duration of each Choghadiya is not fixed — it changes with sunrise-sunset. In summer when days are longer, day Choghadiya can be 100+ minutes, but night Choghadiya only 75-80 minutes. In winter, the opposite. Therefore, accurate computation by your location and date is essential.

The first Choghadiya of the day is determined by that day's ruling planet. Example: Sunday's day starts with Udveg (Sun), Monday with Amrit (Moon), Tuesday with Rog (Mars), Wednesday with Labh (Mercury), Thursday with Shubh (Jupiter), Friday with Char (Venus), and Saturday with Kaal (Saturn).

The order of the eight Choghadiya is always the same: ruler → Saturn → Jupiter → Mars → Sun → Venus → Mercury → Moon — then repeat. This order is called "Hora order", based on the orbital position of the seven planets. Example: Monday's 8 day Choghadiya — Amrit, Kaal, Shubh, Rog, Udveg, Char, Labh, Amrit. Night Choghadiya follow the same order.

Choghadiya and Other Muhurat Systems

Choghadiya is not the only muhurat system. Complete analysis of the five panchang elements — tithi, nakshatra, yoga, karana, vaara — is the traditional and more accurate method. Choghadiya is a quick alternative — when detailed muhurat computation is not feasible.

General rule: Small and daily activities — travel, meetings, purchases, going out — Choghadiya is sufficient. Major life events — marriage, griha pravesh, naming, first feeding, sacred thread — require complete panchang and horoscope analysis.

Abhijit Muhurat is a special period — the 8th muhurat of the day (about 48 minutes around midday) — considered universally auspicious (except Wednesdays). If Abhijit Muhurat coincides with an auspicious Choghadiya (Amrit/Shubh/Labh/Char) — that is the supreme muhurat.

Rahu Kaal is different from Choghadiya — Rahu Kaal is a specific 1-1.5 hour segment of the day that can overlap with any Choghadiya. If an auspicious Choghadiya (like Amrit) falls in Rahu Kaal — work is not started during that time. Choose Choghadiya only after checking it is separate from Rahu Kaal/Yamaganda/Gulika Kaal/Bhadra.

Practical Uses of Choghadiya

Daily travel: If you are traveling, Char Choghadiya is best — it is specially designed for travel. Amrit, Shubh, Labh — also favorable. Avoid travel during Rog, Kaal, Udveg (exceptions for short trips).

Business inception: For new business, opening a shop, inauguration — Labh Choghadiya is best (Mercury ruled, deity of wealth). Shubh and Amrit are also excellent. Kaal Choghadiya is also favorable for some wealth-accumulation work (exception).

Worship and religious work: Worship in Amrit or Shubh Choghadiya yields special fruit. Navratri vrats, Satyanarayan Katha, havan, peace recitations — all do in Amrit/Shubh Choghadiya.

Medical and medicine: Starting a new medication, surgery, or important medical decision — best in Amrit Choghadiya. Treatment in Rog Choghadiya is prohibited (contrary to its name — treatment in Rog is considered inauspicious).

Marriage discussion and engagement: Hold engagement discussions in Shubh Choghadiya — being Jupiter-ruled, it brings longevity and devotion to the relationship. Hold engagement ceremony in Amrit Choghadiya.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Choghadiya an alternative to panchang?

No. Choghadiya is a simplified muhurat-system — sufficient for daily and small activities. For major life events (marriage, griha pravesh), complete panchang — tithi, nakshatra, yoga, karana, vaara — and horoscope analysis is essential.

Should night Choghadiya also be checked?

Yes, if the work is to be done at night. Night Choghadiya runs on the same principles as day. Choosing Amrit/Shubh night Choghadiya for the first night of marriage (suhagrat) is a traditional practice.

Is Choghadiya different for each city?

Yes. Choghadiya is based on sunrise-sunset — Delhi's sunrise is 30 minutes different from Chennai's, so Choghadiya is also different. Our calculator gives local computation for 200+ cities.
