Panchang Guide — complete guide to understanding and using the Hindu panchang. Panchang is not merely a date-calendar — it is the confluence of Vedic astronomy, astrology, and daily life. The five elements of panchang — tithi, nakshatra, yoga, karana, vaara — guide your daily decisions.
In this guide we will learn in detail the complete method of reading panchang, practical use of the five elements, muhurat-determination, vrat-festival list, sunrise-sunset computation, management of eclipses-sankrantis-dishashul, and use of modern digital panchang.
✦ Reading Panchang — Basic Elements
Each entry (date) of panchang contains the following information: 1) Gregorian date and weekday. 2) Hindu month and paksha. 3) Tithi and its end time. 4) Nakshatra and its end time. 5) Yoga and karana. 6) Sunrise and sunset (local). 7) Moonrise and moonset. 8) Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda, Gulika Kaal. 9) Abhijit Muhurat. 10) Choghadiya (day and night). 11) Special vrat-festivals (if any).
Reading order: First view date and month. Then tithi (which one of Shukla/Krishna paksha). View nakshatra — which one Moon is in currently. Understand yoga and karana. Then view time-related information (sunrise, Rahu Kaal). Finally muhurat and Choghadiya.
Time-related nuances: Tithi and nakshatra can change throughout the day. Example: If panchang says "Tithi: Saptami till 14:32" — then Saptami till 14:32, after that Ashtami. For muhurat-determination, view tithi-nakshatra at the time of work.
✦ The 5 Elements of Panchang — Detailed Guide
Tithi (1st element): Based on angular difference of Moon and Sun. 30 tithis (15 Shukla + 15 Krishna). Auspicious: Dvitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi, Trayodashi, Purnima. Inauspicious (rikta): Chaturthi, Navami, Chaturdashi, Amavasya (for most work).
Nakshatra (2nd element): Moon's position. 27 nakshatras. Each 13°20'. 7 nature categories — chara, sthira, tikshna, mridu, ugra, mishra, laghu. For marriage mridu+sthira, for travel chara, for property sthira are best.
Yoga (3rd element): On sum of Sun+Moon longitudes. 27 yogas. Auspicious: Siddhi, Brahma, Dhruva, Saubhagya, Shobhana, Indra, Shiva, Variyan. Extremely inauspicious: Vyatipata, Vaidhriti.
Karana (4th element): Half of tithi. 11 types (7 chara + 4 sthira). Vishti karana (Bhadra) completely prohibited — for auspicious work.
Vaara (5th element): Day of week. Each ruled by a planet. Auspicious: Mon, Wed, Thu, Fri. Inauspicious: Tue, Sat (for special work).
✦ Method of Muhurat-Determination
Muhurat-determination is a scientific process. Step 1: Determine the nature of work — marriage, griha pravesh, business, etc. Step 2: Make a list of auspicious month, tithi, nakshatra, yoga, karana, vaara for that work.
Step 3: Choose your convenient date from the list of auspicious periods. Step 4: View panchang on that date — combination of all 5 elements should be auspicious. Step 5: Selection of time-specific muhurat (Abhijit, Amrit Choghadiya).
Step 6: Final check — avoid Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda, Gulika Kaal, Bhadra karana. If doing horoscope analysis, also view lagna purity and planetary positions.
Simple rule: If all 5 elements auspicious + Abhijit muhurat + free from inauspicious periods = maha-auspicious muhurat. If 3-4 elements auspicious = ordinary auspicious. If 2 or less auspicious = prohibited.
✦ Special Panchang Concepts
Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda, Gulika Kaal — three inauspicious periods of the day. Each about 1.5 hours. New work prohibited. All three timings change by weekday.
Dishashul — day-specific direction-prohibition. Sun-Friday west, Mon-Sat east, Tue-Wed north, Thu south. Avoid travel from this direction.
Bhadra — Vishti karana. Falls in one segment of the day. Auspicious work completely prohibited. Fire-work, war-work favorable.
Purnima-Amavasya — monthly. Purnima auspicious (especially Satyanarayan vrat), Amavasya auspicious for ancestral work, inauspicious for other work.
Ekadashi, Chaturthi, Ashtami, Chaturdashi — monthly vrat-tithis. Ekadashi for Vishnu, Chaturthi for Ganesha, Ashtami for Devi, Chaturdashi for Shiva.
✦ Modern Digital Panchang
In modern times, digital panchang is replacing traditional book-panchang. Our online panchang — Muhurat Choghadiya — provides remarkable accuracy. Computation based on Jean Meeus's book "Astronomical Algorithms" (NASA-grade). Sidereal conversion using Lahiri Ayanamsa. Local computation for 200+ cities.
Benefits of digital panchang: 1) ±2 minute accuracy (more than book-panchang). 2) For any date — from past 1000 years to next 1000 years. 3) For local city. 4) Instant muhurat-computation. 5) Available in Hindi and English.
Relevance of book-panchang: Although digital is more accurate, book-panchang has its own specialty — mainly annual festival-list, vrat-katha, astrological tendencies. Many families use combination of both.
