Lord Vishnu is the second of the Hindu Trimurti (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva) and the preserver of the cosmos. He is described from the Rigveda through the Puranic literature in great detail. In the Vaishnava tradition, He is worshipped as the supreme Parabrahman.
The name "Vishnu" means "all-pervading" — he who pervades everything. "Narayana" means "one who dwells in water" and "the refuge of men". Vishnu reclines on Shesha-naga in the Ksheer-Sagar; Goddess Lakshmi serves at his feet; and from his navel emerges a lotus on which Brahma manifests.
When adharma rises, Lord Vishnu descends to Earth to re-establish dharma — this is the doctrine of "avatara". The Dashavatara are most famous — Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha, Vamana, Parashurama, Rama, Krishna, Buddha, and Kalki.

✦ Symbolism & Meaning ✦
Vishnu represents the "sattva guna" (purity, knowledge, compassion). His four weapons signify — conch (sound, primal vibration), discus (wheel of time and dharma), mace (austerity and disciplinary power), lotus (discernment and detachment). His repose on Shesha represents the eternal stable principle within the endless flux of time. Vishnu-darshan = the doctrine of preservation — protection, grace, and mercy.
