Griha Pravesh — the sacrament of first entry into a newly built or renovated home. It is an ancient and extremely important sacrament of the Vedic tradition. According to scriptures, one should not reside in a house without proper griha pravesh — it can bring inauspicious effects on the house and family.
There are three types of griha pravesh — Apurva (first entry into a newly built house), Sapurva (return after foreign travel or long absence), Dwandva (re-entry after natural disaster or misfortune). Each type has different muhurat rules.
✦ Significance and Purpose of Griha Pravesh
The main purpose of griha pravesh is to spiritually purify the house and obtain blessings of the deities. This sacrament is based on Vastu Shastra — ensuring balance of the five elements (earth, water, fire, air, ether) in the house. Griha pravesh done in proper muhurat brings happiness, prosperity, health, and peace to the family.
Traditionally, several pujas are performed before griha pravesh — Bhumi Pujan (before construction), Vastu Shanti, Griha Pravesh Havan, and Navagraha Shanti. Each has its own significance. On the day of griha pravesh, a toran is placed at the main door, Grihalakshmi (kalash filled with milk) is taken inside the house, and Lord Ganesh is worshipped first.
Vastu dosha removal is also part of griha pravesh. If any vastu dosha remains in the construction — like a toilet in the northeast corner, or a south-facing main door — vastu puja during griha pravesh helps reduce the effects of these doshas.
✦ Auspicious Tithis and Nakshatras
Shukla Paksha sacred tithis — Dvitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Dvadashi, Trayodashi — are best for griha pravesh. Chaturthi, Navami, Chaturdashi (rikta tithis) are completely prohibited. Amavasya and Purnima are generally avoided.
Auspicious nakshatras: Ashwini, Rohini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Anuradha, Uttara Phalguni, Uttarashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada, Shravana, Dhanishtha, Shatabhisha, and Revati. Among these Pushya, Hasta, Anuradha, and the three Uttaras (Uttara Phalguni, Uttarashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada) are best.
Prohibited nakshatras: Bharani, Krittika, Ardra, Ashlesha, Magha, Purva Phalguni, Vishakha, Jyeshtha, Mula, Purvashadha, Purva Bhadrapada. Griha pravesh in these nakshatras may bring inauspicious events to the house.
✦ Auspicious Vaaras and Months
Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday — all four vaaras are auspicious for griha pravesh. Tuesday and Saturday are completely prohibited (intense energy of Mars and Saturn may bring inauspicious effects). Sunday is generally avoided, although in some schools acceptable for Sun-favored work.
Auspicious months: Magha, Phalguna, Vaishakha, Jyeshtha — four months are best. Shravana, Bhadrapada, Ashwina, Kartika (Chaturmas) — griha pravesh prohibited (Vishnu sleep period). Pausha — like Malmaas — prohibited.
Special auspicious days: Akshaya Tritiya (Vaishakha Shukla Tritiya, 20 April 2026), Vijayadashami (Dussehra, October), Devotthani Ekadashi (Kartika Shukla Ekadashi, November) — griha pravesh is considered extremely auspicious on these dates.
✦ Complete Procedure of Griha Pravesh
Day morning: Bathe in Brahma Muhurat and wear clean clothes. Begin with Ganesha puja — Ganpati is the remover of obstacles, and his first worship ensures any work is completed without obstacles. Navagraha Shanti puja — invocation of all nine planets and obtaining their blessings.
Establishment of Grihalakshmi kalash at the main door — full pot (filled with milk, water, rice, coins), mango leaves and coconut. Both husband and wife carry it inside the house — wife enters first (right foot first).
Vastu Puja and Havan — invocation of Vastu Purusha, invocation of five elements at nine corners of the house, Agni-Havan, Gayatri-mantra japa, Swastivachana. The pandit purifies each room of the house by sprinkling Ganga water.
Bhojan and Dakshina — after the puja, pandit and brahmins are fed and given dakshina. Close relatives and friends are also invited and fed. The first night's meal must include milk, sweet items (kheer, halwa), and dal-rice.
Special caution for the first 40 days — for 40 days after griha pravesh, a continuous fire (lamp/ghee lamp) is kept lit in the house. During this period, the family does not eat dinner outside and the house is not left empty. This is called the "Vastu Jagriti" period.

✦ Frequently Asked Questions
Should griha pravesh puja be done in a rented house too?▼
Yes. Griha pravesh puja should be done on first entry into a rented house too. However, for a rented house, a brief puja (only Ganesh-puja, kalash sthapana, Grihalakshmi entry) is sufficient. Full Vastu Shanti is not required.
What preparations to make before griha pravesh?▼
House should be fully ready — painting complete, main door installed, electricity-water active. Puja materials: coconut, betel nut, mauli (sacred thread), rice, turmeric, kumkum, Ganesh-Lakshmi idols, kalash, mango leaves, flowers, incense, lamp, sweets. Contact the pandit one day in advance.
Is sleeping in the house on the first night mandatory?▼
Yes. Continuous residence in the house is mandatory for the first 3 days (40 days in some schools) after griha pravesh. A lamp is also continuously lit during this period. If full residence is not possible, at least the first 3 nights must be spent in the house.
