Vehicle Purchase Muhurat — selecting an auspicious time to buy a car, bike, scooter, truck, or any vehicle. In Indian tradition, a vehicle is considered a "horse" (mount) — it carries you safely to your destination, therefore its purchase should be in an auspicious muhurat. This is not mere superstition — it is a mental and spiritual preparation.
Over 25 million vehicles are sold annually in India — out of these, about 60% Indian families check an auspicious muhurat before vehicle purchase. In this article, we will study the complete rules of vehicle purchase muhurat, important dates of 2026, and vehicle-puja procedure in detail.

✦ Traditional Vehicle-Puja Procedure
From the vehicle showroom: Puja arrangements are usually already made at the dealer's showroom. A brief puja by the pandit — Ganesha-remembrance, swastik tilak (in front of vehicle), breaking a coconut, lighting incense and lamp. In some Hindi regions, mauli is tied on the 4 wheels of the vehicle.
Bring home and worship: Bring the new vehicle directly home and perform puja — keys should first be with the head of the family (man). Stop the vehicle outside the house, before showroom — perform full puja.
Puja materials: Coconut, betel nut, mauli, flowers, incense-lamp, idols of Ganesha and Lakshmi, kumkum, akshat (rice), sweets (especially curd-boondi or jaggery), 5 lota of kalash, turmeric.
Puja procedure: Make rangoli in front of the vehicle. Tilak (kumkum-haldi) on all four wheels, tie mauli. Break a coconut in front of the vehicle (auspicious sign: breaks in one strike). Sit inside and perform Ganesha puja. Circumambulate the vehicle 5 times. The first time the vehicle is driven, only the owner should drive it.
First drive: First drive of the new vehicle in an auspicious direction (east, north, ishan). Go to a temple for the first time and have darshan. If temple is not possible, a small round near the home. Long journey prohibited on the first day — for vehicle and driver coordination.
Special remedies: Keeping Hanuman Chalisa, Gayatri Mantra, or a small Ganesha-idol in the vehicle — traditional practice for safety. Tying lemon-chillies (to ward off the evil eye).
✦ Special Considerations
Number plate: Some people also check numerology on the vehicle's number. 1, 3, 5, 6, 9 numbers are generally auspicious; 4 and 8 are considered inauspicious in some classes (associated with Saturn). Sum of last digit — if auspicious — vehicle is auspicious. However, this is not part of the Vedic tradition.
Color choice: According to astrology, choose a color that matches your rashi. Aries/Scorpio — red. Taurus/Libra — white/cream. Gemini/Virgo — green. Cancer — white/silver. Leo — golden. Sagittarius/Pisces — yellow. Capricorn/Aquarius — blue/black. This is just a suggestion — safety and convenience are primary.
Reason for prohibition of Tuesday-Saturday: Mars is the cause of vehicle-accidents, Saturn-Saturn slows speed. Buying a vehicle on both these days is traditionally believed to risk an accident or mechanical failure. From a modern perspective, this is a question of mental preparation.
Used vehicle: Muhurat is necessary for old vehicles too — especially check the history of the previous owner. If the previous owner had any accident, the vehicle is believed to have "negative energy" — purify by sprinkling Ganga water.

✦ Frequently Asked Questions
Should muhurat be checked for small vehicles like bicycles/scooty too?▼
Checking muhurat for big new vehicles (car, bike, truck) is traditional. Less strict for small rides like bicycles, scooties. However, bringing on an auspicious day is good — Thursday/Friday/Akshaya Tritiya.
When to do vehicle insurance and registration?▼
Complete all paperwork (insurance, registration, finance) on the day of purchase — this "connects vehicle to owner". Vehicle should be completely legally ready from the first day.
Don't accidents happen during muhurat?▼
Muhurat increases probability, doesn't guarantee. Cautious driving, vehicle maintenance, traffic rules — all are necessary. Muhurat is a "favorable beginning", but continuous vigilance is your responsibility.
