Marriage — the most important of the sixteen samskaras (sacraments) of Hinduism. For this reason, marriage muhurat selection requires unparalleled care and precision. A correct muhurat ensures not only the success of the ceremony but also sets the direction of the entire married life of the bride and groom.
Wedding muhurat selection is a complex science. The "Vivah Prakaran" chapter of Muhurta Chintamani gives 50+ rules — tithi, nakshatra, yoga, karana, vaara, masa, lagna, chandra-tara, position of Jupiter and Venus, Mangal Dosha — all must be considered together. In this article, we will study all the major wedding muhurat rules and the auspicious dates for 2026 in detail.
✦ Auspicious Months for Marriage
Traditionally, five months are considered best for marriage — Magha, Phalguna, Vaishakha, Jyeshtha, and Margashirsha. In these months the Sun is in Uttarayana (moving northward), which is favorable for auspicious work. Ashadha, Shravana, Bhadrapada, Ashwina, Kartika — these five months are called "Chaturmas" and marriage is prohibited.
The reason marriage is prohibited during Chaturmas: from Devshayani Ekadashi (Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi) to Devotthani Ekadashi (Kartika Shukla Ekadashi), Lord Vishnu is in slumber — no mangalik samskara is performed during this period. In 2026, Devshayani is 26 July and Devotthani is 21 November — meaning marriage is prohibited between these dates.
In Pausha month, the Sun is in Sagittarius which is considered like a "Malmaas" — marriage prohibited. Pausha 2026 is from 14 December 2025 to 13 January 2026. Similarly, marriage is not done during Holashtak (8 days before Holi).
✦ Auspicious Tithis for Marriage
Shukla Paksha tithis are considered more auspicious — especially Dvitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi, Trayodashi. Chaturthi, Navami, Chaturdashi are "rikta" tithis — marriage prohibited. Ashtami and Amavasya are generally avoided as well.
Some Krishna Paksha tithis are also auspicious — Krishna Dvitiya, Tritiya, Panchami (acceptable in some schools). But Shukla Paksha is considered best because the Moon is waxing — a sign of positive energy.
Special auspicious days: Akshaya Tritiya (Vaishakha Shukla Tritiya) — the most auspicious day of the entire year, "Abujh Muhurat" — any work is auspicious without checking muhurat. Basant Panchami (Magha Shukla Panchami), Vivah Panchami (Margashirsha Shukla Panchami) — Sri Rama-Sita marriage day. Devotthani Ekadashi (Kartika Shukla Ekadashi) — beginning of wedding season.
✦ Auspicious Nakshatras for Marriage
11 nakshatras are considered especially auspicious for marriage — Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Mula, Uttarashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada, and Revati. These are called "Vivah Nakshatras". Being mridu (gentle) and sthira (fixed) in nature, the husband-wife bond remains stable and pleasant.
Prohibited nakshatras: Bharani, Krittika, Ardra, Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, Mula (in some schools), Purva Phalguni, Purvashadha, Purva Bhadrapada, Chitra, Dhanishtha (especially for Magha-shaakha). Marriage in these nakshatras is believed to bring marital discord, illness, or widowhood.
Marriage is not done in the janma nakshatra (of either bride or groom) — this is called "janma-dosha". Marriage in the bride's janma nakshatra is especially prohibited.
✦ Position of Moon, Jupiter, Venus
Chandra Bala is supreme in marriage. For both bride and groom, Moon should be in 1, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11th house from their natal Moon. In 4, 8, 12th house creates "Ashtam Chandra" dosha.
Jupiter strength is also essential. If Jupiter is combust, retrograde, or in baalavastha (infant state) — marriage prohibited. In 2026, Jupiter is retrograde from 30 December 2025 to 22 April 2026 — some astrologers do not recommend marriage during this period (though many modern views do not strictly enforce this).
Venus strength is especially important for the bride. If Venus is combust — marriage prohibited. In 2026, Venus is combust from 30 January to 8 March 2026 (combust in Aquarius-Pisces). Marriage should be avoided during this period.
✦ Mangal Dosha and Other Tests
Mangal Dosha is the most important pre-marriage test. If Mars is in 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, or 12th house in either bride's or groom's horoscope — they are "Manglik". If both are Manglik — the dosha is cancelled. If only one is Manglik — pre-marriage remedies like Mangal Shanti, Kumbh Vivah are performed.
Kundali Milan (Ashta Koota Guna Milan) is the second mandatory test. Out of 36 gunas, 18+ is the minimum (marriage permitted), 24+ auspicious, 28+ very good, 32+ excellent. Nadi Dosha (same nadi for both), Bhakoot Dosha (6-8 or 2-12 zodiac position), Gana Dosha (Deva-Rakshasa combination) — these three major doshas need special attention.
Shad Dosha (six types of marriage doshas) are also examined: Surya-Sankranti dosha (marriage prohibited on Sankranti day), Tithi-Sankranti dosha, Masa-Sankranti dosha, Grahan dosha (prohibited 7 days before-after eclipse), Shraddha dosha (prohibited during Pitru Paksha), and Bhadra dosha.

✦ Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best date for marriage?▼
Akshaya Tritiya (Vaishakha Shukla Tritiya) — 20 April in 2026 — is the most auspicious day of the entire year. It is called "Abujh Muhurat" — no need to check muhurat for any work. Additionally, Basant Panchami (24 January 2026), Vivah Panchami, Devotthani Ekadashi are especially auspicious.
Can marriage be done during retrograde Jupiter?▼
Traditional view: No. In 2026, Jupiter is retrograde from 30 December 2025 to 22 April 2026. Some classical texts consider marriage prohibited during this period. Modern view: retrograde Jupiter is not an obstacle to auspicious work — but the kundali matching should be precise.
Why is marriage prohibited during Chaturmas?▼
From Devshayani Ekadashi to Devotthani Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu is in slumber for 4 months — mangalik samskaras prohibited. In 2026, this is from 26 July to 21 November. It is also scientific — this period covers monsoon, harvest, religious festivals — inconvenient for big ceremonies like marriage.
