✦ Marathi panchang's "scorpion-time" — sandhi avoided for travel ✦
✦ What is Vinchudo? ✦
Vinchudo is a distinctive concept in Marathi panchang. Marathi "Vinchu" means "scorpion". It denotes the sandhi (junction) period when the Moon occupies the meeting-point of certain nakshatras — whose energy is said to be sharp like the scorpion's sting.
The most known form of Vinchudo — when the Moon is in the sandhi between the last pada of "Jyeshtha" nakshatra and the first pada of "Mula" nakshatra (~5 ghatis ≈ 2 hours). This period is also called "Abhuktamoola" or "Gandanta" in some texts.
In Maharashtra, traditional panchang is consulted, and travel, griha pravesh, marriage talks, and new ventures are all avoided during Vinchudo. Mantra-japa, meditation, and pitru-tarpan may be performed.
✦ Concept & Rule ✦
Astronomical basis: the time the Moon spends at a nakshatra-junction. Vinchudo = Jyeshtha–Mula sandhi (also Vrishchika–Dhanu sign-junction). Occurs about once per lunar month, lasting ~2 hours. Detection: Moon's sidereal longitude is near 240° (end of Vrishchika). Three classical sandhi periods: Revati–Ashwini (Pisces-Aries), Ashlesha–Magha (Cancer-Leo), and Jyeshtha–Mula (Scorpio-Sagittarius) — in Marathi tradition, the third is most commonly called "Vinchudo". Pronunciation: vin-chu-do (or "Vinchu" kaal).
