✦ Bhadra Vichar ✦
✦ Vishti Karana — the inauspicious window forbidden for auspicious work ✦
✦ What is Bhadra Vichar? ✦
Bhadra is the 7th of 11 karanas — known formally as "Vishti" karana. Popularly called Bhadra or Bhadra-kaal. Puranic tradition holds that Bhadra is the daughter of Surya and sister of Shani, granted a boon by Brahma: any auspicious work begun during her time will not bear fruit.
Bhadra occurs about 8 times each lunar month — between two tithis, lasting roughly 6–7 hours. Muhurta classics are emphatic — marriage, griha pravesh, travel, mundan, gold purchase, business inauguration are all forbidden during Vishti karana.
Bhadra's "location" also matters — Patala Bhadra (in the netherworld) is not strictly forbidden, Bhuloka Bhadra (on Earth) is most restrictive, and Swarga Bhadra (in heaven) is favorable for ancestral rites. The location depends on the tithi and paksha.
✦ Concept & Rule ✦
Bhadra forms when the Sun-Moon angular difference advances by 6° into the 52nd karana slot — across 60 karana slots in a lunar month, Vishti occupies positions 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56 (8 times per month). Each Bhadra lasts ~6–7 hours. It falls in the first or second half of Shukla Chaturthi/Ashtami/Ekadashi/Purnima and Krishna Tritiya/Saptami/Dashami/Chaturdashi. Mitigation: the "Bhadra-mukha" (first 5 ghatis = ~2 hours) is most restrictive; the "Bhadra-puchha" (last 3 ghatis) permits some routine work.
