✦ Mythological Story — Birth of Ganesha
According to Shiva Purana, before bath, Mata Parvati made a small boy from her turmeric and infused life into him. Made him doorkeeper and said — "Don't let anyone in." Then Lord Shiva returned — the boy stopped him. Angry Shiva cut off the boy's head.
When Parvati saw this — she lamented. Shiva promised — would attach the head of the first creature found to the boy. First found was an elephant calf — attached its head and revived the boy. This boy was called "Gajanan" (elephant-faced). Shiva gave the boon — Ganesha would be worshipped first among all deities.
Ganesha's birth is believed to be on this day (Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi). Special significance of midday period — time when Sun is right above the head.
✦ Idol Installation and Puja Procedure
Pre-preparation: Bring idol 1-2 days before. Avoid eye-contact "before installation" at the showroom (classical tradition). Clay idol is best (eco-friendly), avoid POP (Plaster of Paris) made.
Muhurat installation (14 September 11:08 AM-1:35 PM): Choose clean place — east or north facing. Red/yellow cloth on chowki. Bath idol with panchamrita (milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar). Pure water-bath. Panchopachara worship: sandal-tilak, akshat, flowers, incense-lamp, naivedya.
Special puja materials: 21 durva (Ganesha's most loved), 21 modaks (traditional bhog), red flowers (especially hibiscus, lotus), sindoor, incense, ghee lamp, coconut, betel nut, bel-leaves (being Shiva's son).
Mantra-japa: Ganesh Gayatri "Om Ekadantaya Vidmahe, Vakratundaya Dhimahi, Tanno Danti Prachodayat" 108 times. Mool mantra "Om Gam Ganapataye Namah" 11 or 108 times. Sankatnashan Ganesh Stotra, Ganesh Chalisa recitation.
Daily puja (10 days): Morning-evening aarti. Modak/laddu bhog. 21 durva each day for 11 days. New fruit each day. Include children in aarti. Evening bhajan-kirtan.
✦ Prohibition of Moon-Sighting — Fear of False Accusation
A unique tradition on Ganesh Chaturthi — moon-sighting completely prohibited. If anyone accidentally sees the moon — fear of "mithya kalank" (false accusation) for the entire year.
Mythological story: Once Moon laughed seeing Ganesha — "Strange elephant-headed deva!" Ganesha angrily cursed — "Anyone seeing you on this tithi will face false accusation." Moon begged forgiveness — Ganesha said the curse won't fully reverse, but if someone hears "Syamantaka Mani Katha" the accusation will prove false.
Clear mention in Srimad Bhagavata: Lord Krishna once saw the moon on Ganesh Chaturthi — as a result false accusation of "Syamantaka Mani theft" was made. Krishna proved his innocence with the story of Satyabhama and Syamantaka Mani.
In modern times many people are careful — don't lift their head on Ganesh Chaturthi night. If accidentally sighted — Syamantaka Mani katha recitation is mandatory.
✦ Visarjan — Final Farewell
Meaning of visarjan — immersing the idol in water. Traditionally on Anant Chaturdashi (11th day). However, options of 1.5, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 days for personal installation.
Before visarjan: Final aarti. Apology before the idol — for any mistake or incomplete puja. Modak and fruit-bhog. Take the idol with family to river/sea/well.
Visarjan-place: River, sea, large pond, or well. Due to modern pollution-concerns, small water-sources (in bucket, kalash, into plants) also acceptable. Clay idol can be immersed at home — clay into plant the next day.
Visarjan-mantra: "Gachha Gachha Surashreshtha, Svasthane Parameshvara. Yatra Brahmadayo Devah, Tatra Gachha Hutashana." Meaning "O supreme deity, go to your place — where Brahma and other deities reside." "Ganpati Bappa Morya, Agle Baras Tu Jaldi Aa" — famous Maharashtrian slogan.
✦ Eco-friendly Ganesh Utsav
In modern times, environmental concerns have grown. Water-pollution from POP idols — fish deaths in rivers after immersion, spread of heavy metals. Toxic chemicals in synthetic colors.
Eco-friendly options: 1) Pure clay idol — completely soluble. 2) Idol made of turmeric — divine and medicinal. 3) Plant-seed idols — plant grows after immersion. 4) Natural colors made from turmeric, sandal, gomay (cow dung) in colors.
Maharashtra government and other states have now banned POP idols. "Eco-friendly Ganesha" movement. Many sculptors returned to traditional clay-art.
Home immersion: If possible make your own clay small idol. 1.5 or 3 days puja. Water-immersion in bucket. Clay-water into plants.
