About Saraswati Mata

Epithets: Vani, Bharati, Sharada, Hamsavahini, Veenavadini, Brahmani, Bagdevi

Saraswati Mata is the third of the Hindu Tridevi and the presiding goddess of knowledge, music, art, and the power of speech. As Brahma's consort and the Mother of the Vedas — "Veda-mata". In the Rigveda she is worshipped as the river Saraswati; the deity-form developed from this.

Saraswati symbolizes pure knowledge — free of ego, anger, and attachment. She is distinct from Lakshmi — Lakshmi grants material prosperity, Saraswati grants intellect. The wealth of knowledge is eternal; material wealth is transient.

Vasant Panchami (Magha Shukla Panchami) is her supreme day. On this day, vidyarambha samskara, book-puja, veena-puja are performed. She is also worshipped in the third phase of Navratri. Her installation in schools, libraries, and music halls is highly auspicious.
