All Amavasya dates of the year — for Pitru-tarpan and ritual snan

🌑

What is New Moon Dates?

Amavasya is the final tithi of Krishna Paksha, when the Moon and Sun share the same ecliptic longitude — making the Moon invisible. Each lunar month has one Amavasya — typically 12 per year.

Amavasya is considered the supreme tithi for Pitru-tarpan and shraddha rites. Special Amavasyas include Somvati (on Monday), Mauni (Magha), Hariyali (Shravana), Bhadrapada (Kushotpatini), Ashvin (Mahalaya/Sarvapitru shraddha), Kartik (Diwali Amavasya), Margashirsha (Bakula Amavasya).

Tarpan and charity on Amavasya yield a thousand-fold result. Bathing in the Ganga or other sacred rivers brings exceptional merit. Sadhana, mantra-japa, and meditation are also highly favored.

Concept & Rule

Astronomical basis: Amavasya forms when the angular difference between Moon and Sun is zero (or a multiple of 360°) — both at the same ecliptic longitude. Technically tithi-ordinal 30. The Moon hides behind the Sun and is not visible. Our list uses the Amavasya active at sunrise as the day's Amavasya — the traditional standard.
