✦ Ten Tantric forms of Shakti — from Kali to Kamala ✦
✦ About Dasha Mahavidya ✦
Epithets: Dasha Mahavidya, Dasha-shakti, Ten Tantric Matrika
Dasha Mahavidya = the ten principal Tantric forms of Shakti. The word "Mahavidya" means "great wisdom" or "great vidya-shakti". These goddesses are ten distinct forms of Brahmi-shakti — each with her own seat, mantra, yantra, and siddhi-fruit.
Puranic legend — Sati attempted to attend her father Daksha's yajna without Shiva's permission. From her anger, the ten Mahavidyas manifested — surrounding the ten directions and blocking Shiva's path of refusal. Shiva relented.
Sadhana of all ten Mahavidyas is part of the Tantric path — guru-diksha is essential. Each siddhi relates to functions like "uchchatan, marana, sammohana, stambhana". Sri Vidya (Tripura Sundari) is the most benign and renowned.
✦ Iconography ✦
Each Mahavidya has a distinct form — Kali dark four-armed with skull-garland; Tara blue three-eyed; Tripura Sundari red-complexioned and benign; Bhuvaneshwari white and serene; Chhinnamasta self-decapitating; Bhairavi red-complexioned; Dhumavati smoke-colored, old-aged; Bagalamukhi yellow, paralyzing enemies; Matangi green, lover of music; Kamala lotus-complexioned (Lakshmi-form).
