✦ Abhijit Nakshatra ✦
✦ The hidden 28th nakshatra — bestower of victory ✦
✦ What is Abhijit Nakshatra? ✦
Vedic astronomy commonly recognizes 27 nakshatras, but ancient texts describe a "hidden" 28th nakshatra — Abhijit. The name literally means "the all-conquering". It lies between Uttara Ashadha and Shravana.
Abhijit's sky-position is very clear — its yoga-tara (chief star) is Vega, one of the brightest stars in the northern sky. Sanskrit texts call it "Brahma's nakshatra", and its presiding deity is Brahma.
Tradition holds that Sri Rama was born in Abhijit Nakshatra (as recorded in the Bala Kanda of Valmiki Ramayana). Hence work begun in Abhijit grants "inevitable victory" — especially for warfare, examinations, lawsuits, and any difficult endeavor.
Abhijit is not counted in the standard 27-nakshatra panchang — but it occupies the last portion of Uttara Ashadha's 4th pada and the first portion of Shravana's 1st pada. The Moon stays here roughly 7–10 hours per transit.
✦ Concept & Rule ✦
Doctrinal position: Abhijit Nakshatra spans tropical longitude 276°40' to 280°53'20" — a total extent of 4°13'20". It overlaps the final part of Uttara Ashadha's 4th pada and the early portion of Shravana's 1st pada. Distinguish from the daily 48-minute "Abhijit Muhurat" — that arises when the Sun reaches mid-sky (24 minutes before and after local noon). The nakshatra is a Moon-position concept; the muhurat is a Sun-position concept.
