✦ About Navagraha ✦
Epithets: Navagraha, Graha-raja, Ashta-dikpalas, Grahadhipa
The Navagraha are the nine principal celestial bodies of Vedic astrology and their deity-powers — Sun (Surya), Moon (Chandra), Mars (Mangal), Mercury (Budh), Jupiter (Brihaspati), Venus (Shukra), Saturn (Shani), Rahu, and Ketu. They are known as "graha" — those who grasp, i.e., govern the karmic fruit of beings.
Seven of them (Sun to Saturn) are actual celestial bodies. Rahu and Ketu are "shadow-grahas" — the intersection points of the Moon's orbit with the Sun's ecliptic (lunar nodes). They are also given deity-form because they cause eclipses.
Navagraha worship is essential in every Hindu temple — outside the garbha-griha lies the "navagraha-sthana". Each planet has its day, metal, gemstone, mantra, presiding deity, and bhoga. Their positions in the birth chart determine the joys and sorrows of life.

✦ Symbolism & Meaning ✦
The Navagraha embody the doctrine of karma — past karmas are inscribed in the present chart as planetary positions. Planets do not "punish" — they are merely the conveyors of karmic fruit. Like a judge who does not punish but renders judgment proportional to the offense — planets give fruit proportional to karma. Shanti-puja softens karmic fruit; it does not cancel it.
