Maha Lakshmi — eternal consort of Vishnu and one of the Hindu Tridevi (Lakshmi, Saraswati, Parvati), the supreme goddess of prosperity. Her emergence from the churning of the ocean is the most celebrated legend. The name "Lakshmi" relates to "lakshya" (purpose/auspicious aim) — she who fulfills auspicious intentions.
Maha Lakshmi is not stationary — she is "chanchala" (mobile). She dwells where there is dharma, cleanliness, faith, and effort. She departs from the lazy, immoral, and arrogant. Her many forms — Adi, Dhana, Dhanya, Gaja, Santana, Veera, Vijaya, Vidya Lakshmi.
Diwali night (Amavasya) is her most auspicious worship-time. Friday is her special day. Daily recitation of Mahalakshmi Ashtakam and Sri Suktam is highly rewarding.

Four-armed, golden-complexioned — holding two lotuses (padmas), abhaya-mudra (fearlessness), and varada-mudra (boon-giving). Padmasana — seated on a fully bloomed lotus. Two elephants performing abhishek (Gaja Lakshmi form). Red or pink silk garments, gold ornaments, earrings, crown, necklace. Wealth showering down on both sides.

Lotus = purity, non-attachment (rooted in mud yet untainted). Four arms = dharma, artha, kama, moksha — the four purusharthas. Two elephants = abhishek from earth (kirti) and heaven (spiritual upliftment). Four lotuses = prosperity spreading in four directions. The owl-vahana = the discernment that sees through darkness — symbol of caution in wealth. The Sri Suktam is the most ancient Vedic Lakshmi-stotra.
