✦ About Lord Shiva ✦
Epithets: Mahadeva, Shankara, Nilakantha, Rudra, Bholenath, Gangadhara, Chandrashekhara, Tryambaka, Umapati, Shambhu
Lord Shiva is the third of the Hindu Trimurti and presiding deity of the destructive force. In the Shaiva tradition, He is the supreme Parabrahman. "Shiva" means the auspicious one — bringer of welfare. His other form is "Rudra" — connected to "rodan" (weeping), shaking the wicked.
Shiva is called "Adi-yogi" — the first guru of yoga. Seated in meditation on Mount Kailash — on one hand the great destroyer, on the other Bholenath — the simplest, most accessible deity. As Ardhanarishvara with Parvati, he reveals the unity of Purusha and Prakriti.
The Shiva-tattva is a confluence of paradoxes — cosmic dissolution and rebirth, meditation and tapas, destruction and grace. As Nataraja, his cosmic dance directs the five cosmic activities — creation, sustenance, destruction, concealment, and grace.

✦ Principal Mantras ✦
ॐ नमः शिवाय
Om Namah Shivaya
Meaning: Salutations to Shiva. The 5-syllabled mantra — five syllables symbolizing the five elements. The core mantra of all Shiva-sadhana.
ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम् । उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान्मृत्योर्मुक्षीय मामृतात्॥
Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam · Urvarukamiva Bandhanan-Mrityormukshiya Mamritat
Meaning: We worship the three-eyed one (Shiva), fragrant and nourishing. Like a cucumber separates from its stalk, may we be released from death — but not from immortality. The Mahamrityunjaya mantra — for longevity and disease-removal.
ॐ हौं जूं सः ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वः ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे...
Om Haum Jum Sah Om Bhur-Bhuvah-Svah Om Tryambakam Yajamahe...
Meaning: A more potent form of Mahamrityunjaya — total destroyer of death and disease.
✦ Symbolism & Meaning ✦
Shiva transcends the three gunas. Trishul — victory over sattva, rajas, tamas. Damaru — the primal sound, the first cosmic vibration. Crescent moon — symbol of mind. Ganga — the ceaseless flow of knowledge. Third eye — the fire of discernment that burns lust and anger. Bhasma (ash) — all ego will burn to ash. Nandi — the symbol of dharma. The Shiva-linga = confluence of formless and form Brahman.
