Janma Kundali (Birth Chart) — the foundation of Vedic astrology. It is an astronomical "snapshot" showing the position of nine planets — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu — and 12 zodiac signs at the exact moment of your birth. In Sanskrit, "Kundali" means "circular" — depiction of 12 parts of the sky.

Janma kundali is the complete blueprint of a person's life. Nature, career, marriage, children, health, wealth-property, fame, death — indication of all in kundali. Maharishi Parashar gave the complete method of kundali construction and analysis 5000+ years ago in "Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra". In this article, we will study Janma Kundali — 12 bhavas, 9 grahas, 12 rashis, dasha-system, types of kundali, and analysis-method in detail.

The 12 Houses of Janma Kundali

1. Lagna Bhava (Self) — personality, body, nature, appearance. East direction. Sun's natural lordship.

2. Dhana Bhava (Wealth) — wealth, family, speech, value-education. Jupiter's lordship.

3. Parakrama Bhava (Courage) — courage, younger siblings, short travel, communication, hands. Mars's lordship.

4. Sukha Bhava (Happiness) — mother, home, property, vehicle, heart, education. Moon's lordship.

5. Santana Bhava (Children) — children, intellect, love, entertainment, past-life punya. Sun/Jupiter.

6. Roga Bhava (Disease) — disease, enemies, debt, servants, maternal uncle. Mars/Saturn.

7. Vivaha Bhava (Marriage) — spouse, partnership, foreign-travel. Venus's lordship.

8. Ayu Bhava (Longevity) — longevity, hidden matters, unexpected events, ancestral wealth. Saturn.

9. Bhagya Bhava (Fortune) — fortune, dharma, guru, father, higher education, travel. Jupiter.

10. Karma Bhava (Career) — business, government position, fame, father's business. Saturn/Mars.

Types of Kundali

Rashi Kundali (Lagna Kundali / D-1): Main kundali. Position of planets in signs. Most famous. Outline of complete life.

Chandra Kundali: Kundali from Moon sign. Mental tendencies, emotions. Basis of daily horoscope.

Navamsa Kundali (D-9 / Navamsha): Marriage, dharma, subtle results. 9 divisions of sign. Second most important in Vedic astrology.

Dashamsha (D-10 / Dashamsha): Career, government position, fame. 10 divisions. For job-business analysis.

Saptamsha (D-7): Children-related results. Hora (D-2): wealth. Drekkana (D-3): siblings. Chaturthamsha (D-4): vehicle-property. Shashthamsha (D-6): disease-enemies.

Shodashvarga: Set of 16 kundalis — for complete analysis. Used by high-level astrologers.

Dasha-System — Vimshottari

Vimshottari Dasha is the most famous dasha-system of Vedic astrology. 120-year cycle for 9 planets. Each planet's mahadasha is of different duration: Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17, Ketu 7, Venus 20. Total 120 years.

Dasha determination from janma nakshatra. Whichever nakshatra Moon is in at birth — its ruling planet is your first mahadasha. Remaining duration in proportion to that planet's full duration.

Within mahadasha "antardasha" (sub-period) — small portion of each planet. Example: In Saturn mahadasha (19 years), Saturn-Saturn antardasha (3 years), Saturn-Mercury (2.7 years), etc. Within antardasha "pratyantar dasha" (sub-sub-period) — even more subtle.

Dasha-fruit depends on planet-position in horoscope. If planet strong, exalted, in favorable house in kundali — dasha auspicious. If combust, retrograde, debilitated, in enemy sign — dasha inauspicious. Study of dasha is the basis of prediction.

Main Points of Kundali Analysis

Lagna (Ascendant): "Face" of kundali — basic nature of person. Which one of 12 lagnas. Where the lagna lord sits.

Yogas (Combinations): Special planet-combinations giving special results. Raja Yoga (royal happiness), Dhana Yoga (prosperity), Vidya Yoga (knowledge), Sannyasa Yoga (spiritual), Kalatra Yoga (marital happiness), Santana Yoga (child happiness). Hundreds of specific yogas.

Doshas: Inauspicious planet-combinations. Mangal Dosha (Mars in specific houses), Kaal Sarpa (all planets on Rahu-Ketu axis), Kemadruma (Moon alone), Visha Kanya (special nakshatra-tithi-vaara birth). Pacified through remedies.

Ashtakavarga: Total strength-computation of planets. Counting of bindus in each house. For transit analysis.

Frequently Asked Questions

What information is needed for janma kundali?

Three accurate pieces mandatory: 1) Birth date (day/month/year), 2) Birth time (accurate to minute — lagna changes every 2 hours, so accuracy mandatory), 3) Birth place (city level — longitude and latitude required). Our kundali calculator makes accurate chart based on these three.

Can kundali be made if birth time is unknown?

Not accurate. Only approximate kundali can be made. "Birth Time Rectification" can be done by astrologer based on events — but complex. If possible, find birth time from parents, hospital records, or birth certificate.

Is online kundali reliable?

Yes, if based on pure astronomical computation. Our kundali calculator uses Jean Meeus algorithms + Lahiri Ayanamsa — NASA-grade accuracy. For important decisions (marriage, griha pravesh) take personal consultation from local experienced astrologer.
