✦ Vedic definitions of sunrise — Arunoday, Suryodaya, Brahma Muhurat ✦
✦ What is Hindu Sunrise? ✦
In Western science, "sunrise" has just one meaning — when the upper limb of the Sun appears at the horizon. But Vedic and astrological tradition recognizes multiple subtle definitions — Arunoday, Brahma Muhurat, Surya Udaya, Drig Udaya. Each has its own use.
For panchang calculation, the most important is "Surya Udaya" — the moment the upper limb of the Sun touches the mathematical horizon (with astronomical refraction). All five panchang elements (tithi, nakshatra, yoga, karana, vaara) are determined at this instant. Our site uses this standard.
Beyond this, "Arunoday" — about 45–48 minutes before sunrise — and "Brahma Muhurat" — the 48-minute window beginning 96 minutes before sunrise — are considered highly significant. These periods are best for sadhana, meditation, and mantra-japa.
✦ Concept & Rule ✦
Four types of sunrise: (1) **Arunoday** — ~45–48 minutes before sunrise, when the Sun is 8° below the horizon (start of civil dawn). (2) **Brahma Muhurat** — begins 96 minutes before sunrise and lasts 48 minutes — the supreme time for sadhana. (3) **Surya Udaya (Suryodaya)** — the moment the Sun's upper limb touches the horizon (-0.833° altitude including atmospheric refraction) — the panchang-calculation standard. (4) **Drig Udaya** — the locally-visible sunrise time, accounting for mountains/buildings. Astrology always uses "Surya Udaya"; spiritual practice favors "Brahma Muhurat".
