Tulsi (Holy Basil — *Ocimum sanctum*) is the most sacred plant in Hinduism. Every traditional Hindu home has a Tulsi planted in the courtyard or balcony, worshipped daily.

Mythological Origin

According to the Padma Purana, Tulsi was Vrinda — a devoted wife of demon Jalandhara. Vishnu, to defeat Jalandhara, took his form and broke Vrinda's chastity. Heart-broken, Vrinda cursed Vishnu to become a stone (Shaligram). Touched by her devotion, Vishnu blessed her to be eternally with him as a plant — Tulsi. Hence Tulsi-Shaligram are inseparable.

Why Daily Puja?

  • **Vishnu's beloved**: No Vishnu puja is complete without a Tulsi leaf
  • **Air purifier**: Releases ozone and oxygen even at night (rare among plants)
  • **Health**: Antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, immunity-booster
  • **Spiritual**: Said to ward off negative energies

Daily Tulsi Puja Vidhi

Morning (after bath) 1. Stand before Tulsi plant 2. Offer water (do not pour on Sundays, Ekadashi, eclipses) 3. Light a deepak (oil lamp) 4. Offer flower, kumkum, akshat (rice) 5. Recite Tulsi mantra 11 or 108 times 6. Take 3 parikrama (circumambulations) 7. Bow with folded hands

Evening 1. Light deepak again 2. Offer water and flower 3. Recite mantra

  • **During eclipse**
  • **Without bath**

If you must pluck on these days, do so before sunrise.

On Kartik Shukla Ekadashi (Devuthani), Tulsi is married to Shaligram (Vishnu form). This marks: - End of Chaturmas - Beginning of marriage season - Re-awakening of Vishnu

Frequently Asked Questions

What if Tulsi plant dies in my house?

Considered inauspicious. Immediately remove and plant a fresh one. Donate the dried plant in a flowing river — never throw in dustbin. Often indicates negative energy or neglect.

Can Tulsi be planted on the ground?

Traditionally Tulsi is placed on an elevated platform (vrindavan/chabutra), not directly on ground level. Symbolically she is divine and should not be at foot-level.

How many leaves to use in puja?

For Vishnu/Krishna puja, even 1 leaf is enough. For Satyanarayan or special pujas, 11 or 21. Never use Tulsi for Ganesh, Shiva, Surya — they don't accept it (per shastra).
