Monday (Somvar) is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The word "Som" relates to Soma (moon), and Shiva wears the moon on his head — hence Monday is his day. Devotees who keep Monday vrat and do Shiva puja attain wealth, marriage, health, and moksha.

Why Monday?

Astrological - Monday ruled by Moon (Chandra) - Chandra adorns Shiva's head - Worshipping Shiva strengthens Moon in horoscope

Spiritual - Moon represents mind (manas) - Shiva controls mind through wisdom - Monday worship = mental peace

Mythology Sati's father Daksha cursed Moon to wane; Moon prayed to Shiva who gave him sanctuary on his head. Since then, Moon's day belongs to Shiva.

Three Monday Vrats

1. Somvar Vrat (Weekly) Every Monday — simplest form. Suitable for beginners.

2. Solah Somvar Vrat (16 Mondays) Powerful sankalp for marriage, children, specific wishes. Started by Goddess Parvati per Shiva Purana.

3. Sawan Somvar Vrat (Sawan month — 4-5 Mondays) Most powerful — Shiva's preferred month. Sawan 2026: Tuesday 21 July to Wednesday 19 August. So 4 Mondays: 27 July, 3, 10, 17 August.

Items Needed

Essential 1. Shiva linga (small) — black stone or crystal 2. Plate (panchapatra) 3. Bilva patra (3-leaf bel) — must be 3 leaves intact 4. White flowers (lotus, jasmine, harshringar) 5. Dhatura flower or fruit (Sawan special) 6. Bhang (cannabis leaves) — optional, traditional Sawan 7. Gangajal (or pure water) 8. Raw milk 9. Curd, ghee, honey, sugar (Panchamrit) 10. White chandan 11. Bhasma (ash) or vibhuti 12. Rudraksha mala 13. Camphor 14. Incense (sandalwood)

Optional - Akshat (rice + kumkum) - Dakshina coin - Naivedya (white sweet — kheer, malpua)

Complete Monday Vidhi

Step 1: Bath & Sankalp (10 min) - Bath before sunrise - White or saffron clothes - Sit east-facing - Sankalp: "Today, Monday [date], I [name], for fulfillment of [wish], do Shiva puja with shraddha."

Step 2: Ganesh Smaran (3 min) First worship Ganesh — universal start. Vakratunda mantra × 11.

Step 3: Shiva Avahan (5 min) `Om Namah Shivaya` × 21 times to invoke Shiva into linga.

Step 4: Panchamrit Abhishek (15 min) Pour over linga in this order while reciting "Om Namah Shivaya": 1. **Cow milk** — gives moksha 2. **Curd** — gives healthy progeny 3. **Ghee** — gives wealth 4. **Honey** — gives sweet-voice, eloquence 5. **Sugar** — gives happiness 6. **Gangajal** (final cleanse) — gives all desires

After each, chant Mahamrityunjaya.

Step 5: Bilva Patra Offering (10 min) - 11, 21, 108 leaves - Apply chandan tilak on each leaf, then offer - Chant "Om Namah Shivaya" each - Most loved offering — surpasses all flowers

Step 6: Vastra & Yajnopavit (3 min) Symbolically offer cloth and sacred thread.

Step 7: Bhasma & Tilak (3 min) Apply bhasma on linga in 3 horizontal lines, plus on own forehead.

Step 8: Naivedya (5 min) Offer white sweet (kheer best for Monday). Show with reverence.

Conclusion

Monday Shiva puja is the householder's path to all four purusharthas — dharma, artha, kama, moksha. Start with weekly Somvar; graduate to Solah Somvar; aspire to full Sawan. Shiva is the most loving deity — he asks only for bhava, not perfect ritual. Har Har Mahadev!

Frequently Asked Questions

I cannot fast — can I still do Monday Shiva puja?

Yes, absolutely. Vrat (fast) is one form of devotion. Puja with abhishek and bilva patra alone gives 80% of benefit. Diabetics, working professionals, sick — do puja, skip fast. Bhava matters most.

Can women do Shiva linga abhishek during periods?

Traditional shastra says no. Modern view from many gurus (Sadhguru, etc.) — feminine energy is at peak; mental worship and mantra recitation is fine; physical touching of linga avoided.

Why no haircut in Sawan?

Spiritually: hair (kesh) connects to subtle energies. Cutting reduces tapas-shakti. Physically: monsoon humidity makes scalp/skin sensitive — cuts heal slowly, infection risk higher. Both reasons combine in tradition.
